I will be arriving in Vilnius this Wednesday and while I was reading up on the city, I found a lot of reviews and comment about the safety of the city. I will be there for 5 days so wanted to some input from locals if possible. I read that Vilnius is safe during the day but that one needs to be very careful at night especially if you are walking around the old town all alone, not so much because of drunk people, but more because of muggings, aggressive people that don't like foreigners, homeless people, hookers and their pimps, etc.
I have traveled to many places in Eastern Europe Latvia , Poland , Belarus , Slovakia , etc and never came across such alarming stuff. So just wondering if anyone else can give me their experience on this. Hi, you can re-post your thoughts on Vilnius forum to get more replies.
To say that the bus station area is dangerous is over exaggerating. As this a transit place you need to be more careful about your own belongings and be not distracted by approaching strangers, take the normal precautions while travelling like everywhere else. I happen to be in the bus station time from time, travel myself or see somebody off, never have seen or experienced any dangerous situations.
I see no problems at all there during day time. Daylight now is almost until 10pm, plenty of people in the streets, you will be totally fine.
Vilnius in general is a very safe city. I agree with Endis - don't worry about those reports. The bus station is next to the train station and I arrived there from Riga , also no problem. Enjoy Vilnius! My travelogue can be found at www. I've been living in Vilnius for a long time and I feel very safe here. Especially, if you walk in the old town even at night , there's nothing to worry about.
